If you are here because you saw my previous project, ‘How To DIY A Custom Tray For Easter’ then you are in the right spot! Are you ready to transform old small spindles into charming farmhouse-style Easter decorations?

In this blog, I will show you How To Thrift Flip Old Spindles Into Farmhouse Style Easter Decorations

This project pairs perfectly with the bunny rabbit custom tray that I created using IOD transfers!

Below is a list of the items you will need to recreate this project:

In my stash, I have a wide variety of old spindles. You can find old wooden spindles of varying sizes at thrift stores and estate sales. I always grab them when I see them because I know I will dream up a unique DIY project.

I started by cutting them down with my miter saw.

I carefully cut them, ensuring that one end was slightly larger while the other end remained slender.

To achieve the desired carrot-shaped appearance, the next step is to sand down the edges.

A belt sander is definitely not necessary. However, I have one, so I used it to speed up the process!

Sanding the spindles rounds off the edges, giving the wood spindles a more tapered and carrot-like form.

Since we are going for a handmade look here, don’t worry if it isn’t perfect!

I love this $16 greenery garland from Hobby Lobby. I always buy it when it is 40—50% off!

Greenery is so much cheaper to buy by the garland as opposed to buying each individual sprig.

Next, I used my cordless drill, and drill a hole at the end of the bigger side of the carrot.

Then, I used my hot glue gun to apply glue into the hole.

Next, I added a sprig of greenery into the hole and let it dry.

After I added greenery to each carrot, I let the glue dry.

Once the wooden carrots were dry, it was time to paint them orange.

I do not have orange paint on hand, so I decided to mix two beautiful Fusion Milk Paint Colors: Dala Red & Swedish Yellow.

Milk paint is created by adding 50% of powder to 50% of water.

For this mixture, I mixed together the two colors first. Then, I added water. And finally, mixed it all together in a mixing cup.

This paint color came out exactly how I wanted it. It is a more vintage orange - which is perfect!

Using a STAALMEESTER Pointed Sash Brush, I applied 1 coat of milk paint to the wooden carrots. Since I am going for a vintage look - it is okay if you don’t get full coverage. 1 coat of paint is perfect!

Looking to upgrade your paintbrushes? I highly recommend purchasing the STAALMEESTER paintbrush 3 pack!

When you buy the pack of 3 on my website - you SAVE $10!

If you would like the paint to dry more quickly, grab your heat gun and apply heat to the fresh paint.

Since this is milk paint, you can also heat it long enough that the paint starts to crackle a little bit. This will give your wooden carrots an aged, rustic look.

To seal these wooden easter carrots, I used Fusion Hemp Oil Wood Finish.

I applied the finish with a STAALMEESTER Pointed Sash Brush and then gently used a paper towel to wipe off the excess oil.

Okay, how CUTE is that?

I'm already envisioning how I can craft a similar tray for different holidays!
