Did you know you can create REAL rust and patina with Dixie Belle paints? Yes! Dixie Belle has 3 different paints and 3 different sprays, creating a metallic-aged look.

In this project, I created a decorative mini Christmas tree farm using chess pieces and cream-colored bottle brush trees. It turned out SO good and I can’t wait for you all to re-create it!

In this blog, I will show you How To Thrift Flip Regular Items Into Vintage Metallic Christmas Decor Using Dixie Belle Patina Paints!

Below is a list of the items you will need to recreate this project:

I ordered this box of 25 bottle brush trees from Amazon!

If you follow me on Facebook you have seen all of the projects I have done with the larger brushes.

I used the little trees for this project to create a really cute Christmas decoration!

I painted the chess pieces with Dixie Belle Patina Paint in the color Bronze.

I painted one coat of the bronze patina paint on each chess piece using a STAALMEESTER Round Artist Brush.

These paints come in 3 different color options - bronze, copper or iron.

Then, I let the chess pieces dry.

They should look similar to the picture below when they’re dried.

What makes this paint so cool is that it has an ingredient that reacts with the patina spray to create an aged look.

For this project, I did an experiment with the green and the blue sprays. I sprayed half with green and half with blue.

First, I sprayed the chest pieces on the right with the blue patina spray.

Then, I used a paper towel to dab the chess pieces.

Look at how that rusts! The below picture shows the bronze paint with the green spray. The reaction is a little more subtle than the blue spray.

And this photo shows the bronze paint with the blue spray! I love how these turned out!

Once I got the fun painting part out of the way it was time to add the Christmas trees to the chess pieces.

I twisted the wood base off the bottlebrush tree.

Next, I used a small drill bit to drill a small hole into the top of a chess piece.

Then, I applied a drop of glue right into where I drilled that hole.

Next, I stuck the wire of the bottle brush tree right into that hole so that the glue could dry around it.

And that is it! How unique are these bronze-rusted chess pieces?

I LOVE how they turned out!

I recently applied Dixie Belle Patina Paint to a chest piece; the results were stunning!

The versatility of Patina Paints and sprays allows you to use them on a variety of surfaces—ceramic, wood, glass, plastic, and anything else that can be painted.

The DIY possibilities are endless with this unique technique!
