I purchased this piece from a thrift store and loved that it was all wood with these little cubbies.
I am going to be updating it with a unique Milk Paint technique. You are going to love it!
For this project, I used Fusion Milk Paint in the color London Fog!
If you have not used milk paint before - it comes in a powder form.
To mix milk paint, combine 1 part powder with 1 part water.
The best way to mix your paint is to use an immersion blender. However, if you do not have one, you can use a spoon!
I painted 2 coats onto the wood cubby holder. I am using a STAALMEESTER Pointed Sash Brush to apply my milk paint.
The first coat may look transparent - that is okay.
I applied the first coat, let it dry, and then applied the second coat. The second coat will have much better coverage!
Milk paint creates the most beautiful vintage paint finish. This item will look like it is 100 years old when I am done with it!
Next, I used a heat gun to force the milk paint to crackle and chip!
When I use this technique on raw wood - the crackle looks AMAZING!
Next, I used a piece of sandpaper to sand this piece lightly.
Not pictured: I used a wet wipe to wipe off the excess sanding dust. I highly recommend doing this before you apply the sealant.
Next, I want to seal my piece so that the paint does not continue to chip off.
I used Hemp Oil Wood Finish and a La Petite brush to seal my milk paint cubby holder.
This product will go on with a green tint - don’t worry! It will dry clear.
Next, I use a paper towel to wipe off the excess oil.
One of my favorite parts about this project is that I can style this piece all year round.
To style the holder for Christmas. I decided to roll up music sheets.
All you have to do is cut a music sheet into smaller strips.
Then, roll the music sheets up and stuff them inside one of the cubby holes.
You can also add pine greenery, bottle brushes, Christmas berries or any other holiday embellishments that fit your home decor style!
